Week 3

This week, we learnt about health and safety in the workplace. I learnt that every year, 200 people die due to the work environment. A further 1 million are injured and 2 million get an illness.

It is the responsibility of the employer to make sure that health and safety precautions are in place and available. However, it is an employees responsibility to not do anything to put themselves at risk and to report any incidents or faulty equipment that needs to be replaced.

If an employer doesn’t have precautions in place, then an injured or ill person may be able to sue them if it was through no fault of their own. Also, there are legal responsibilities that an employer makes sure that all employees are safe and properly trained to limit the risk of injuries.

Ways to ensure health and safety in the workplace include training, consultations and risk assessments.
